Côte de Nuits

A twenty-kilometre limestone bench, almost entirely Pinot Noir, with the densest concentration of Grand Cru in the wine world.

The Côte de Nuits is the northern half of the Côte d'Or — a thin escarpment of east-facing limestone slopes running south from Dijon to the outskirts of Beaune. The villages take roughly four miles end to end. Inside that strip sit twenty-four of Bourgogne's thirty-three red Grands Crus.

The pattern at this zoom is consistent. Each village owns a stretch of the slope; the best parcels — Grand Cru — sit mid-slope, where drainage and sun angle align; village and regional wines fall above and below them. The appellation outlines harden here because at this scale the parcel boundaries are the point.

The Côte de Nuits is a single-grape laboratory. Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned, climate-anxious, site-honest variety — it is the closest thing wine has to a transcription system for soil. The villages do not taste alike because the slopes do not taste alike, and Pinot is the medium through which the difference becomes audible.
